What does it mean to be Gluten-Free? It’s estimated that 1 in 133 Canadians or 250,000 people have celiac disease (and it’s growing) and approximately 3 million Americans. It’s a lifelong, genetically based disorder that occurs when gluten – a protein found in wheat, rye and barley – triggers an abnormal immune response that damages the lining of the small intestine interfering with the absorption of vital nutrients. It can be painful and debilitating. Symptoms can include anemia, diarrhea, arthritis, intense abdominal pain, weight loss and, in children, delayed growth. But most people have symptoms that are subtler, such as bloating, excess gas or fatigue. People who have gluten ‘sensitivity’ will also benefit from a gluten-free diet. These people test negative for celiac disease but react poorly to gluten and may report abdominal pain, headaches, irritability, depression and chronic fatigue. There’s no evidence, however, that following a gluten-free diet will…

What a SURPRISE it was!!! This was the invitation that everyone received!! Wow! Thank you to Ken (my creative genius) and everyone else who made this happen!! They say happiness is a state of mind…For me, this was the “Real Deal”. I was overwhelmed with a happiness I had never felt before. This ‘grateful’ post to my family is a little late as the party was September 18th but Ken and I decided to take off for a few days to Montreal right after the party. When we got home last Thursday, the businesses needed our attention and before you know it, 10 days have gone by. I’m so sorry!! This note is for my wonderful husband Ken and my beautiful daughter Erinn and her dashing boyfriend, Mike. I still can’t believe what they did for me and totally blew my mind AWAY. Somehow they got together about 80+ of…

Awesomeness at 50. Celebrating my half century today! (and being cool in my own skin). My goodness it’s here and I’m okay. I made it! I’m the same person that I was 20, 30, 40 years ago….but I have to say, only a better, more refined and updated model. 🙂 To think of all the ups and downs, and good and bad struggles in my life and to have mastered them all and be where I am today gives me these goose bumps and shivers through my core. I can’t imagine living my last 50 years any other way and I’m very grateful for all of my lessons and ‘teachers’ that have come graciously into my life. I feel GREAT! Better than ever! 50 is Fabulous! 50 is Liberating! 50 is knowing who I am and to not be afraid to be it. 50 is the ultimate in Feminine Energy…

Not Just Vegan – Why eat “Whole Food” Vegan Many people jump into a trendy vegan diet  with the thought that as long as they aren’t eating animal products (meat, fish, dairy, etc), they will be just perfectly healthy. However, white pastas, sugary cookies (did you know that Oreos are vegan?), white flour cakes and breads or even processed ‘vegan faux meats’ does not make for a healthy vegan! Vegans should think of themselves more as herbivores – true whole-food, plant eaters – with a focus on Whole plant foods (as opposed to veggie chips in a bag!).  If it grows from the ground and it’s still intact – go for it.  If it somehow ends up in a box with lots of words that need special decoding, step away from it.  Just because a person has cut animal products out of their diet does not mean they are healthy.  There…

Introducing our new “Skinny Cookie”! This is the cookie that will help you maintain all those healthy resolutions or ‘plans of action’ you made to yourself to keep for 2013. We’re here to help you keep those promises you made to yourself at Kelly’s Bake Shoppe. It’s hard starting the new year and at times, I know, overwhelming to make and implement change but I’m certain that at least one of these following resolutions were on your list of things to change this year….maybe living better overall, EATING better, doing one random act of kindness daily, getting healthier in some way, taking up yoga, learn how to meditate, working out more, lose weight (always on most people’s lists), cure a health ‘condition’, be more loving or maybe even being consciously grateful daily for what you have. To take it one step further, I even have people who have begged me to help them, in…

My daughter Erinn… Well the time has come and she is officially done school…we celebrated Erinn’s graduation from McMaster University yesterday at our home. Thank you to my wonderful husband Ken (the best party planner ever), the event was spectacular. Dear Erinn, No words will ever fully express how I feel and what this day meant to me. Pride. Excitement. Joy for you. Sadness now that it’s done. Erinn, you are a gift to the world. You are not mine, but a gift that came through me… for me to give to the planet. With humble gratitude. Thank you for choosing me as your mom. You are not only my dearest friend, my motivational mentor, my spiritual life coach, my focus, and my loyal confidant, you also my daughter. I look at you everyday with grateful eyes wondering how I could have been so fortunate. I’ve never had to discipline…

Happy Mother’s Day Mom! This is a very heart-felt tribute to my awesome mom, Colleen. The world is a whole lot brighter because of her love and her ‘spirited’ and energetic love of living. I just think the world of her and wish I’ve told her more often. I love her so much. Bright, always funny, extremely tenacious, and a survivor of a crazy life, she was never one to feel sorry for herself and today, she continues to be that same person. I’ve have been blessed with a fantastically wonderful life with my mom and sister and dad and now daughter, husband, brother-in-law, nephew and niece. I really have been blessed with a magically wonderful life and I’m so grateful. I wanted to share with you who my mom is. For the majority of us, we have always had our mothers love us, support us, raise us, hug us,…

Do you ever stop and visualize what’s possible in your life or business? Are you driven? Driven to not stop for any reason to attain our goals, even if it takes weeks, months, all hours of the night? Do you dream about things you want to happen and how you want your life to look?  (You must have that vision of what you truly want for that dream to show up or it simply can’t happen). It’s all about changing your ‘shoulds’ to ‘musts’. Apparently, this is what I’m told I do and that I’m a manifestor of that reality in my mind. Hhhmmmmm…. Well a Manifestor is someone who is a catalyst in life. Wherever I go and whomever I meet, it seems I’m a trigger and cause for, well… ‘action’, you might say. I’m so passionate that I laugh a lot, I cry a bit, I talk a lot,…

April 19th, 1990. This was a special day for me. It was the day, 22 years ago, that my beautiful daughter was born – MY gift. She is by far my bestest friend, fantastic cupcake co-baker, and level-headed old soul. I’m humbled by her brilliance and how she always knows what to say or do in any given situation. I rely on her for her well thought out comments and ideas and opinions about life and people. She could run the planet single-handedly. We celebrated at Spencer’s at the Waterfront and were treated royally by Craig and Stephan and the whole team there! Thank you Spencer’s. This was by far the best vegan cuisine we have ever had. Check out the crazy amazing VEGAN dinner they prepared!! (Healthy and ORGANIC Gluten Free and Vegan Cupcakes were were from Kelly’s Bake Shoppe.) Happy Birthday to dear Erinn!
