How I Balanced My Hormones

September 20, 2017

I’m Kelly.
Over a decade ago, my daughter Erinn and I opened Kelly’s Bake Shoppe to make healthy living accessible—and delicious. Now, my journey has grown to embrace personal growth, healing, homesteading, and living in harmony with nature.

Ashwagandha has been helping me for over 2 months now with hormone balancing, sleeping at night, and I swear, magically, minimizing my stress levels. (Ashwagandha is also known as Indian Ginseng, Poison Gooseberry, Winter Cherry, and Padalsingh).
I had done some reading and research over the past few months regarding menopause and hormone fluctuations and the side effects of going into this age of “Goddess Wisdom” (it is what I call the transformation of women into their second (magical) half of their life). There is much talk about what women go through during menopause and some of it can frighten the strongest of us.
I’m grateful that due to eating plant-based foods, dairy is not in my life, so I don’t have the bovine hormones to contend with that so many other people do.  Please know, this is one of the number one culprits to wreak havoc your hormonal balance. If you are still doing dairy, I challenge you to remove it from your life for two weeks and see how you feel (that means not a trace of dairy, cheese, butter, milk, ice cream, sour cream, and yogurt).
I was looking for the right herbal concoction that could keep my skin glowing, and looking hydrated, help me sleep and maintain hormonal health for me. I read an article online a couple of months back and saw on an Instagram Story feed about the wonders of Ashwagandha. It was quite riveting and I decided to research it a bit more and speak to some experts in Ayurveda to find out the truths about this herb. I then decided to try it out for myself and for over two months now, I am feeling better than I have for long time. I’m feeling very strong, sleeping well and seriously, I much more clarity in my mind.

Ashwangandha is an ancient Sanskrit word meaning, “the scent of a horse”. Ashwa means “Horse” and Gandha means “Smell”.  In Ayurvedic traditions, Ashwagandha is used to build immune systems and develop the strength of a stallion, hence, where the name comes from.
Ashwagandha is an adaptogen and fluctuates with what our body needs. Adaptogens are natural substances that work with a person’s body to help them adapt. It will support you as you require it and enables your body and precious hormones to adjust to life’s many stressors. With persistent stress like lack of sleep, fluctuating hormones, getting too hot at night, too much work, relationship issues, toxic environmental pollution, not drinking enough fresh spring water and more, our bodies can do some really crazy things and set off our hormones to go into an imbalance. Adaptogens help us by supporting and regulating important hormones as we need the help.
I use ½ teaspoon in my smoothie in the morning and I take one capsule of ashwagandha in the morning and one at night and I feel incredible! I really do. I feel much more balanced and I’m sleeping through the night. I’m also experiencing much more mental clarity and focus and mental stamina.
Try adding it to any one of our smoothie recipes or to hemp milk (blend 8 ounces water with 2 tablespoons hemp seeds until smooth) add a couple of dates and ½ teaspoon of ashwagandha and blend on high. (buy here for powder form)
Let me know (please!) how you feel after you try this and please give it a month to truly see and feel and difference. If you have any questions, I’m always here.
